Dungannon U-16’s Reach Knock Out Final

Dungannon U-16’s 3 Ballinamallard U-16’s 1

(After Extra Time)

Dungannon U-16’s took on Ballinamallard on Monday night in the semi final of the knock out cup.

What a classic encounter it turned out to be, Dungannon proving the stronger and emerging deserved winners after extra time.

The match was played in Omagh, the pitch surface was poor after a long season, and this did not allow Dungannon to play their usual passing game.

The boys had the majority of the play in the first half but created very few clear cut chances, McElroy fired over after a good run and cross from Wallace, McKenna also heading over from an Arnold corner. Half time 0-0.

The second half was more of the same, Dungannon having most of the possession but finding it difficult to break down a packed Ballinamallard defence.

The clearest chance fell to Lavery who turned well in the box, only to see his shot come off the post.

Ballinamallard created one good chance, when their midfielder shot wide when well placed.

The breakthrough came with 2 minutes of normal time left. Lavery broke away on the left and found his way into the box, the Ballinamallard defender committed a rash tackle from behind and a penalty was awarded. McCammon stepped up and coolly slotted home the pressure spot kick.

However from the kick off, the boys seem to lose their concentration and allowed the Ballinamallard forward in to equalise.

1-1 after normal time, 5 minutes each way of extra time.

In the first period Dungannon had all the possession and this pressure finally paid off when McCammon headed home at the near post from a McElroy corner.

Ballinamallard came forward in the second period, but the defence stood firm, Goodfellow in goals also making an excellent save low down at his near post.

The win was sealed very late on with the decisive third goal. McKenna won a header in midfield which fell to Lavery and his well placed shot from 18 yards beat the keeper.

The final whistle was met with a mixture of both relief and celebration.

An excellent hard working performance over the 80 minutes from all the boys and a well deserved victory.

They now go on to meet Cookstown in the final, a date and venue to be arranged.

Dungannon U-16’s win Mid Ulster League

Cookstown U-16’s 2

Dungannon U-16’s 5

Dungannon U-16’s played local rivals Cookstown last Saturday at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena.

This was the title decider with Dungannon coming out on top with a well deserved victory.

The boys therefore winning the league with a 100% winning record. The achievement being all the more remarkable as they were deducted 6 points at the beginning of the season due to an administration dispute.

Saturday’s game was played in very difficult wet and windy conditions.

Dungannon however were very quick out of the blocks and took the lead within 5 minutes. A 20 yard free kick from Wallace found the corner of the net.

5 minutes later it was 2-0. A good passing move out of defence found Lavery on the left. He turned his marker and passed the ball inside to Wallace who finished well from the edge of the box.

It was all Dungannon at this stage, and a third goal soon followed and what a goal it was. Following a Dungannon corner, the ball was cleared, and Fox who was carrying out his defensive duties on the half way line, met the ball fully 40 yards out and cracked an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. Surely the goal of the season.

After this, the boys seemed to take their foot off the pedal and let Cookstown back into it.

They failed to clear a corner and O’Neill scrambled the ball home from close range. Just before half time, McBrearty scored an excellent free kick, this brought the score back to 3-2.

Dungannon started the second half playing against a strong wind and driving rain. Cookstown created the early chances but the defence of McCammon, Crooks, Girvan and Long stood firm and weathered this early storm. Goodfellow in goals also made an excellent double save at this crucial time.

The fourth and decisive Dungannon goal came midway through the half. An excellent run from Wallace on the right took him to the byline and he crossed for Lavery who dived bravely between 3 defenders to head the ball home.

Dungannon were now well in control and duly scored a fifth with 5 minutes to go. This goal typified their style of play throughout the season. McKenna won a brave header in midfield, Arnold picked up the ball, passed to McElroy on the wing who flicked it first time into Lavery’s path who then crossed for Wallace to complete his hat trick from 8 yards. Final score 5-2.

This was a very hardworking display in difficult conditions, everyman playing his part. A fantastic team effort also from everyone during the season, duly rewarded with the league title.

Congratulations to coach Davy Tate and his assistant Kieran Lavery on a tremendous achievement.

Best wishes also to Cookstown U-16’s this Saturday in the final of the NI Cup

Opponents ‘Out-fox-ed’

Newry Celtic U-16’s 1

Dungannon U-16’s 5

On Saturday, Dungannon U-16’s played Newry Celtic in the league at Kernan Playing Fields, Portadown.

The boys started off well and immediately put Newry under pressure, Lavery hitting the bar within the first few minutes.

Dungannon took the lead after 5 minutes and what a goal it was. The Newry defence cleared a corner to the edge of the box and Fox unleashed a left foot volley into the corner of the net past a static keeper.

Newry upped their game after this and were unlucky not to equalise, their forward shooting wide when well placed, Goodfellow also making a good save when faced with a one on one.

Dungannon also continued to create further chances but could not score that elusive second goal. With 5 minutes of the half remaining, the boys did go 2 up. Lavery’s well placed shot came off the post and Fox finished from close range.

It was all Dungannon in the second half. McElroy was creating havoc up front and he scored the third midway through the half, finishing well from the edge of the box after a good run.

5 minutes later it was 4-0. McKenna found Lavery on the right, he easily turned his marker, raced towards the box and finished neatly in the corner from 15 yards.

Soon it was 5-0. A brilliant through ball from Kelly found Lavery one on one with the keeper and he coolly slotted home.

The boys took their foot off the pedal and allowed Newry in for a late consolation.

An excellent all round display by everyone and a further 3 points in the bag.

This Saturday the boys have an away league game against Windmill.
